Can we add a new dimension to the backing of woven or tufted carpets?

Carpet backing is a crucial component that provides stability, durability, and comfort to the carpet. It typically consists of two layers: the primary backing and the secondary backing.

The primary backing is the fabric into which the carpet fibres are tufted or woven. This layer holds the carpet fibres in place during the manufacturing process. Common materials used for primary backing include woven polypropylene, polyester, and sometimes natural fibers like jute.

The secondary backing is attached to the underside of the carpet to provide additional strength and stability. This layer is usually made from materials like woven polypropylene or polyurethane foam. The secondary backing reinforces the carpet and helps it maintain its shape and durability over time.

Making Carpet Backing Process

The process of making carpet backings involves several steps:

Tufting or Weaving: The carpet fibres are tufted or woven into the primary backing material. This creates the surface of the carpet that you see and walk on.

Applying Adhesive: An adhesive coating is applied to the primary backing to secure the fibres in place. This adhesive can be made from various materials, including latex or polyurethane.

Attaching Secondary Backing: The secondary backing is then attached to the primary backing using the adhesive. This step adds extra stability and durability to the carpet.

Drying and Finishing: The carpet goes through a drying process to remove any moisture from the adhesive. After drying, the carpet may undergo additional finishing processes, such as shearing, to ensure a smooth and even surface.

So can a polyester high performance yarn coated with a low melt polyamide , processed in the right way enable extra rigidity, reduced processing, less latex use, less/no adhesive use amongst other benefits? We invite you to discuss more with us and see if this innovation can work in the carpets you manufacture.
